Pancake Day fun!

The children had a small halt in their journey around Australia to celebrate Pancake Day.  They started of by looking at Pancake Day and its relation to Easter and Lent.
They had great fun having pancake races and were very competitive.

They also had the chance to try some pancakes with a choice of toppings, lemon, jam or golden syrup.  All the toppings went down well.

The children also talked about what they could do to be helpful and kind leading up to Easter.

sea views

While the children were on the way to Australia they had a look at what they could see from the boat. They created their sea views by using different shades of blue tissue paper for the sea, blue crayons for the sky and cotton wool for the clouds. They had fun  and made quite a mess!

Floating and Sinking

On Monday morning we boarded the Endeavour with Captain James Cook and sailed across the Pacific Ocean. Althgh he was a good captain and ensured we ate fruit and vegetables and washed everyday we all scared of the 'cat of 9 tails!' So we decided to build in own boats. Before we got started we thought carefully about the types of materials we may want to use and timed on the shake the boat may need to be.
Our first stop: Floating and Sinking

Cain started our discussion by saying 'big things can't float'
Lewis then had fun dropping in our large rock and making a very big splash!
But Grace assured us 'sometimes big things can float on water and sometimes tiny things can sink'.
Harry and Peter explained that their rock sank because it was heavy but then Maya thought our little stone wild also sink and that wasn't heavy!

Thomas M then explained 'ships have found bottoms (cupping hands together) so they don't sink, Endeavour has a round bottom'.

Jacob remembered a very tricky work 'displaced' after watching a video clip Jaicob informed us 'some things sink because they are big they displaced the water all over the top!'

Amelia did some careful thinking when we looked at the cup 'it can float because it filled with air and it's really light but if the water fills it, it will float because it's got heavy!'

Chloeanne then extended this by saying 'the toys sink because they got all stuff on the inside and no air to make them float'.

We have sailed on to Australia for this week and some of the children have been busy making their own boats!

We have been looking at the journey of Captain James Cook. The children have been creating maps and boats for their own exciting adventure.

Rangoli Patterns

We folded paper into half four times and then carefully used scissors to cut out a pattern onto the paper.
We unfolded our paper to reveal detailed patterns.

We collected together our pattern grids and laid them out on the playground. We then scattered powder paint over our patterns to create our very own Rangoli patterns.
